Greenwood Art Walk

Want some art with your fresh air and exercise? You're in luck. The 6th annual Greenwood/Phinney ArtWalk will take place this year on Friday, May 11, from 6-9:30 p.m. and Saturday, May 12, from noon to 5 p.m. Artwork of all kinds including painting, sculpture, ceramics and more will be exhibited at over 40 different businesses along Phinney/Greenwood Avenue between N. 65th and N. 87th streets.

Maps will be available one week before the event at participating businesses.

North Seattle artists who will be participating in the ArtWalk event include Tracy Wallschlaeger, a Ballard resident and registrar at Whitman Middle School, and Katherine Clark, a full-time artist from Lake City. Both women will exhibit paintings in a realist style.

The Greenwood/Phinney Art Walk is organized by the Greenwood Arts Council. For more information call 684-4096.

Phinney auction set for May 12

The Phinney Neighborhood Association will hold its annual "Spring into Summer" auction on Saturday, May 12, from 5:30-10 p.m. at St. John's Catholic School, Egan Hall, 123 N. 79th. The PNA fundraiser event will feature both silent and live auctions and an open buffet, and will star Bacchus & Arianna Catering and Jerry Toner, auctioneer. Auction items can be previewed on the PNA Web site, www.phinneycenter.org. Admission is $25 per person for tickets bought in advance and $30 per person at the door. To make reservations, call 783-2244. Seattle Public Theater director resigns

Lauren Marshall has resigned as Producing Artistic Director of the Seattle Public Theater to prepare for the birth of her first child, due May 5. Hal Ryder has been named as Marshall's replacement. Ryder is on the drama faculty at Cornish and an experienced theater director. He is also the founder and former executive director of the Open Door Theatre in Everett. Marshall says once she adjusts to being a new parent, she plans to resume her playwriting career and will stay active with SPT as a volunteer. SPT performs at the Greenlake Bathhouse Theater.

U-StreetFair set for May 19, 20

The 32nd annual University District StreetFair will take place this year on Saturday, May 19 and Sunday, May 20. The University District StreetFair, which kicks off the festival season for the Greater Seattle area, typically draws about 80,000 fairgoers for the weekend.

This year's street fair will include many staples of Seattle summer festivals including over 300 arts & crafts booths, a three music stages, an international food court and perhaps most eagerly anticipated, a beer garden. King County Councilman Larry Gossett and University of Washington President Richard McCormick will give keynote speeches on Saturday at noon at the 50th Street Stage located at the intersection of NE 50th Street and University Way.

In addition to these attractions, a foot-traffic only "colorful, carnival-style procession" is planned for Saturday. The procession, which begins at 11 a.m., will start at NE 41st Street and University Way and proceed down University Way to the 50th Street Stage. The event is titled "Procession 2001- A StreetFair Odyssey." In order to help would-be participants prepare for the parade, the University Chamber of Commerce StreetFair Committee will hold a workshop on May 12, from 1-5 p.m., on how to make banners, masks and parade attire. Members of the Fremont Arts Council will assist with the production of this event.

Musical acts to be featured at this year's University District StreetFair include several popular local bands such as MerKaBa and Jump Up.
